Pain under Right Rib Cage

Pain under right rib cage is a very common condition and it is usually associated with severe injury. But there are other causes of pain under right rib cage like health disorders or serious diseases, where the pain is just a minor symptom.

The pain can actually be also felt on the left side as well as the right, and the causes of pain on both sides are actually the same. But pain under right rib cage has a fewer number of causes than pain on the left side.

Inflammation of the Cartilage

Inflamed cartilage is one common cause of pain under right rib cage. Cartilage is located between the breastbone and the ribs, which is why inflammation of this body part can cause a lot of discomfort to the rib cage.

Fracture or Injury

Because ribs are bony structures, they are prone to fractures. An injury that is quite severe, caused by an accident, can have a direct impact on the rib cage and this will lead to severe pain under right rib cage. To properly diagnose the cause of your pain, you need to undergo X-rays to determine whether your rib cage is fractured.

Costochondritis

Costochondritis is caused by inflamed muscles of the rib cage; the pain associated with this disorder is usually felt in the area where the breastbone connects to the rib cage. This disorder is caused by excessive coughing, which results in undue stress on the ribs.

Liver Disease

Any kind of liver disorder may cause pain under right rib cage and in most cases even pain in upper right abdomen.

Pain in Upper Right Abdomen

Pain in upper right abdomen occurs in the right side of the body from the center of the chest going through the umbilicus area directly to the top of the genitals.

There are many causes that have been considered for giving pain in upper right abdomen, such as the following:

  • Gallstones
  • Cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder)
  • Kidney stones
  • Appendicitis
  • Ovarian cyst
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Constipation
  • Pulled muscle
  • Obstructed hernia
  • Food poisoning
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Inflammation of the lower esophagus

To properly understand the underlying causes of pain in upper right abdomen, it is essential to find out which body organ is not functioning properly. Infection and irritation of any body organ may lead to right side abdominal pains.
